Brian Oberlin LIVE at RBC

Thu Oct 12 @ 07:30PM

Brian Oberlin , originally from Rockford, Michigan, is a singing multi-instrumentalist who began his music career with the alto saxophone in grade school. His quest for more music was immediately ignited - drums, guitar, tenor banjo, fiddle, piano, concertina, and, of course, mandolin - his central instrument, which he has played for more than fifteen years. After acquiring his first mandolin at the age of nineteen, Brian attended as many bluegrass festivals and procured multitudes of recordings and books. In 2003, Brian placed in the finals at the 2003 National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, Kansas. Brian has played more than 1,200 live concerts throughout the United States, touring with various ensembles - Slack String, Northern Accent, Grasshoppah, Ida Viper, and now bass+mandolin (www.bassmandolin.com). He performs frequently as a soloist with local orchestras and as a solo act, delving into his original material and songs that have inspired him throughout his music career. In addition to performing, Brian has discovered his passion for teaching. Along with instructing hundreds of students on a one-to-one basis, he teaches dozens of workshops each year and is the founder of the annual River of the West Mandolin Camp. Brian brings a special and unique perspective to all of his students because he is, remarkably, a self-taught musician, spending hours playing and listening and pouring over hundreds of books and scores of sheet music. In 2010, Brian and his wife, Elizabeth, founded the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra (www.oregonmandolinorchestra.org). Brian acts as the Music Director and Conductor of the twenty-five member Orchestra.
